I do not spend a lot of valuable time teaching students to “stay still” and float. ALL students like and need to be moving. When students have learned to rollover, I teach them “sculling or finning.”  Sculling or finning is when you make your hands imitate the dorsal fins on a fish. If you have ever put your arms out of an open car window and played with the wind to lift your arms, you already know how to scull in the water. To scull or fin, you place your arms close to your body, with your hands low and near your hips. You begin to make a long figure eight with your hands (paddles).
