Exercise: The Best Medicine For Chronic Pain

barbienelis

Posted on March 24, 2014

In USA Weekend, February 28, 2014, I read an article written by Judy Foreman that said that although chronic pain is often hidden from the front pages and TV screens, it is Americans’ biggest health problem. Chronic pain also is the number one reason why people go to the doctor-more than cancer, heart disease and diabetes combined. Many people, including many physicians, are unaware of the growing number of available non-narcotic treatments: including exercise!!!  Many sufferers are terrified that if they move, they will damage themselves, but nothing can be further from the truth, according to this article. “To date, there is no scientific evidence that activity and exercise are harmful,” says James Rainville, a spine and rehabilitation specialist at New England Baptist Hospital…

Posted on January 7, 2014

What does everyone want?  Good health!  Why yes, you guessed it-an organic apple for you! Since it’s early January and all of those New Year’s resolutions and goals are still fresh in our minds, let’s keep it healthy…no donuts, not even a munchkin…..yet! Start the New Year off right-stick with your swim schedule, start a new swimming routine or sign up for those swim lessons that you have always wanted to take.  The benefits of swimming go far beyond improving your time in the next triathlon. A research team at Indiana University conducted a study and determined that regular and moderate swimming can significantly delay the decline of such age markers as blood pressure, muscle mass, blood chemistry and pulmonary function. I am living…

Did You Know…….

–Swimmers gain muscle strength throughout their bodies. Who knew? Yes, swimmers use their legs and arms and tighten their stomachs to power the legs and stabilize the core. We have all seen Michael Phelps’ tummy and booty. Need I say more?? –Swimming helps you stay flexible. It’s really important that you can bend over and tie your sneakers. Ya think? You’re not wearing flip-flops right now, are you? Tip: Unless you work at a pool, step out of the flip-flops. Flip-flops are not walking shoes and can do more harm than good. But back to swimming. When swimming, you MUST reach, stretch and pull your way through the water (unless you’re doing the “human stroke,” formally called the doggie paddle). Your ankles and feet…

Who Doesn’t Love Dolphins?

Dolphin Facts: -Dolphins can swim and sleep at the same time. For 8 hours, the entire brain of the dolphin is awake. The left side of the brain then sleeps for 8 hours. When the left side wakes up, the right side of the brain sleeps for 8 hours. -A dolphin can detect underwater sounds from 15 miles away. -Dolphins jump out of the water to conserve energy. -A dolphin can remember a specific tone far better than a human. -The common dolphin’s diet consists of fish and squid.  Dolphins have been seen hunting and working together to herd the fish into tight balls. -Dolphins can swim up to 260 meters below the surface of the ocean, although they are mainly shallow divers and…

Swim Snip

The bikini swimsuit was named after a U.S. nuclear testing site in the South Pacific called Bikini Atoll. Huh? What’s an “atoll” you say? Hey, a teachable moment. I had to look it up myself. HAHAHA.  An atoll is a ring-shaped coral reef and small island that encloses a lagoon and is surrounded by open sea. Who knew??  I think that’s cool, but please do not wear a bikini to swim your laps or wear one to my swim lessons. I have had to fix many a bikini dilemma – I like diving underwater for swim toys but bikini tops, not so much. Wear a one-piece swimsuit or a specially made “swimmer” two-piece swimsuit. Leave the bikini for the beach – and don’t go…

Swim Snip

Posted on December 18, 2012

Swimming helps reduce stress. Swimming works out all of the body’s major muscles. Swimming strengthens the heart and lungs….and wait for it……an hour of vigorous swimming will burn up to 650 calories. Where did I leave my donut?  Swimming burns more calories than walking or biking. But wait-there’s more! Swimming is a great cardiovascular exercise because you are moving against the water’s resistance, which is over ten times that of the air.  Wow, let’s go swimming!
